What are the risks of blind spots and what are the solutions?

When learning to drive a vehicle we are encouraged to always check our blind spots and after a while, it will almost become second nature. You can’t change lane or pull away and begin driving without checking your mirrors and blind spots, so why should a heavy vehicle be any different?

Removing blind spots when driving a bus, what are the risks of blind spots?

When learning to drive a vehicle we are encouraged to always check our blind spots and after a while, it will almost become second nature. You can’t change lane or pull away and begin driving without checking your mirrors and blind spots, so why should a heavy vehicle be any different?

We wouldn’t dream of taking the risk to hit another vehicle, bicycle or even pedestrian as this would not only affect the driver but would affect the 3rd party and their families too … and what is the price of hitting someone?

Public transportation offers the public a convenient method of commuting and is often more affordable, less time consuming and can be far less stressful than taking to a busy road. With 32,000 buses occupying the roads of the UK and around 3 million people travelling via Stagecoach buses alone, we can safely say that public transport serves its purpose.

What is the risk?

With buses sitting at around 40 feet in length and with the mirrors that currently sit on these vehicles only covering 2/3 of the entire length of the bus. You are left with 13 feet of the bus that is not seen by the driver. Blind spots can be the cause of a lot of accidents on the road and they will often occur when a bus or HGV turns left and hits a cyclist who is sitting in an unsighted area on the side or in front of the vehicle.

What is the solution?

We are sure there are a few different devices available that the transport industry can use and some may be better for taxis, buses, HGVs and any other large vehicles. The solution that we can supply is the SURE 360° Drivers Aid which you can find on our website.

The SURE Transport 360
° drivers aid displays a birds-eye view on-screen and can record raw camera images around the vehicle to assist the driver on driving for safely.

The driver can observe the vehicle position and obstacles in their path, improving the ability to park or pass along a road with minimal room. This unit improves situational awareness, helping to avoid incidents with other vehicles or pedestrians.

  • Four ultra-wide angle fish-eye cameras to provide raw images for processing
  • 360o seamless birdseye view display reducing blind spots
  • Automatic generation of birdseye view, easy calibration and operation

This surround-view parking assistant system captures four different views: front, rear, left and right, through the use of four ultra-wide-angle fish-eye camera installed around the vehicle.

With the built-in advanced image processing and stitching algorithm, the system continuously updates and synchronises to display a birds-eye view of the area surrounding the vehicle.

The driver can observe the vehicle position and obstacles in their path, improving the ability to park or pass along a road with minimal room. This unit improves situational awareness, helping to avoid incidents with other vehicles or pedestrians.
